The X Series Paintings

This work lives in contrast. It began as a conversation between two places, two ways of seeing, two versions of daily life.

For years, that daily view was the ocean, cool trade wind breezes, moving clouds across the horizon and landscapes covered in color. This shaped how I painted without my even noticing it.

The forms were organic because the world around me was organic.

The move to a large city replaced that world with something completely different and new.

The sharp edges of high rise buildings, multiple storefronts and graphics were everywhere. Urban geometry filled my eyes daily.

Wanting to express these changing experiences in my work, I began without an exact plan for what the work would become, exploring the feelings from where I had been with those of where I was now.

The work embraces the landscape of my observations. It captures the fading memories of the past and the aliveness of the present.

The result is what has become an entirely new body of work. And my journey of (re)discovery:

The Process: Each piece is created through an additive process of painting, drawing, gathering, cutting, and assembling. Paint, hand-painted papers, original sketches, ink, marker, and select found imagery are layered, removed, painted over and recomposed until the composition is complete. This work is best understood as paintings built through a process of layering, revision, and accumulation.

The S Series Paintings

This body of work immediately followed the completion of the X Series and started with the creation of sculptured wood panels. A nontraditional substrate configuration required an unconventional approach for how to begin.

I had just come through the X Series not knowing where it would lead. That experience had taught me to trust instinct over plan. I began with a deliberate dance between order and chaos. Some shapes creating tension, others structure and balance.

The S Series became a natural next step forward into new territory.
